Fractional currency notes were introduced to tackle coin shortages, partly due to hoarding during unstable times. Coins' bullion value led to their hoarding, making daily transactions challenging. People resorted to using encased postage stamps, known as postage currency. The US Treasury then issued fractional currency notes, mirroring postage currency, with denominations of 5, 10, 25, and 50 cents. These notes were used until 1876 when Congress authorized minting fractional silver coins to redeem the remaining fractional currency.
