If you have been to the Kanapaha Botanical Gardens in Gainesville, Florida you have seen their center piece bamboo on proud display – Bambusa textilis ‘Kanapaha’ also named Wong Chuk or Royal bamboo as it is the bamboo of the Forbidden City in China, home of the Chinese emperors for over 500 years. Its names don’t end there – it is also known as Giant Weavers bamboo.

• A singularly striking bamboo whos’ canes are 2.5 inches in diameter and 30 plus feet tall at maturity. It has blue tones to its canes that will mature to green coloring. The lower side growth will naturally drop showing off the blue coloring of the canes and the coral, rust or even pinkish sheaths will provide a striking contrast until they also drop or fade to tan.
• This clumping, non-invasive bamboo is hardy in zones 8 to 11, with some frost damage in zone 7, but, if need be, after a harsh winter, it will return from the roots in zone 7. While it will need plenty of water when first planted, once the bamboo is established, moderate water is all that will be needed.
• Your plant is currently growing in a 1 gallon pot and will be packaged with watering gel to keep your plant hydrated during its time in-transit.
